Can You Crack It? That Overlooked Dutch Invention That Shaped the Contemporary World
There are many contenders to claim the title of “world’s greatest innovation.” The circular axle. The movable type. The steam engine.
As per a recent publication, though, that honor belongs to the automated sawmill invented through Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.
“Before automated cutting, constructing a modest merchant vessel necessitated around 10 sawyers working over 90 days,” writes the author. “With wind-driven sawmills, an identical quantity of processed timber could be manufactured within seven days.”
Thanks to their speedy mechanical cutter, which converted timber to boards using almost no manual labor, the Dutch could build vessels faster compared to any other nation, an advantage that unleashed a century of Netherlands naval, economic as well as cultural dominance in Europe and the globe.
The Original Genuine Manufacturing Machine
The inventor's lumber mill, argues Dávila, was “humanity’s first true factory apparatus.” A wind turbine rotated a gear. One component converted its rotary motion to up-and-down action to power the saw. Another component changed that same spinning motion into a lateral movement advancing the timber to the cutter. A ratchet system shifted the log forward one precise increment each stroke.
“Each element seemed simple on its own. Corneliszoon’s brilliance lay in how to combine them so they acted in a perfectly controlled order, sawing on every descending motion and advancing on every upward stroke. It was an astonishingly intelligent use of basic components.”
